Xanadu

The word “Xanadu” was first used one-hundred years ago in Samuel Coleridge’s poem about Kublai Khan’s grand palace paradise, and since has come to stand for any idyllic place. Many think of the false utopia built by Charles Foster Kane in Citizen Kane, made up of amassed, pilfered treasures; a stand-in for real life Hearst Castle. It also calls to mind the 1980 roller disco cult-classic musical starring Olivia Newton John.

Over the past twenty five years, Zeitgeist has been trying to build something special. Hopefully an artistic paradise for the city of Nashville. But there’s also charm to be found in the neon lighted nonsense. We’ve left it up to 19 Zeitgeist artists to share their vision of Xanadu in celebration of Zeitgeist’s 25th anniversary this summer.
