I went walking

Statement

Alex Blau explores abstraction, perception, and presence through painting and ceramics, practices that reveal aspects of time and transformation.

In Blau's paintings, overlapping circles blur and dissolve into one another. Drawn from candy wrappers, quilts, and ubiquitous patterns, these hazy forms become portals rather than contained symbols. Through repetition and atmosphere, they evoke moments of clarity that immediately soften - not a fixed point but something constantly appearing and fading. Like twinkling lights, they shift as you look, inviting pause without demanding resolution.

Her ceramic works exist in deliberate contrast: as grounded as the paintings are spatial. Rooted in the textures of the earth - patterns in leaves, lichen on rocks, flashes of found color - these crystalline, encrusted forms celebrate surface and tactility. Funky glazes collide like rocks and crystals with candy and trash, honoring the actual landscape of a walk where the geological and disposable coexist.

Together they function like meditation and the walk itself. One a spacious clearing, the other the cluttered terrestrial terrain we move through.
