Statement
Alex Blau explores abstraction, perception, and presence through painting and ceramics. Her paintings use overlapping circles that blur and dissolve into one another: hazy forms that suggest infinity without quite resolving into it. The circles, drawn from candy wrappers, quilts, and ubiquitous patterns, become portals and thresholds rather than contained symbols. These atmospheric works evoke space and depth, creating floating, optical fields that shift as you look. Their repetition and overlap generate rippling energies and flowing, meandering spaces that hold the complexity of the present moment creating room for pause and breath.
Her ceramic works exist in deliberate contrast: as grounded as the paintings are spatial. Rooted in the textures of the earth: patterns in leaves, lichen on rocks, flashes of found color—these crystalline, encrusted forms celebrate surface and tactility. Together, the two bodies of work function like earth and sky: opposite but interdependent, offering playful, tactile companions to her ethereal paintings.
