| Angels, Demons, and Mortals |
Terry Rowlett is a Nashville based-painter who comes to us via Athens, Georgia and New York City. His tightly rendered characters are reminiscent of the Northern Renaissance, allegorical full-figure portraits of Heironymous Bosch and play out loose narratives before Italian-esque backdrops. These very formal compositions delicately balance museum-like dignity with wry characters such as bikers and cheerleaders. In each instance, the viewer is presented with an interesting cross section of contemporary personalities that can be read alternately as deep psychological portraits and humorous characters and is left to ponder the duality of the “Angel and Devil” in all of us.
Open Gallery: Works on Paper is the second installment in a new series of exhibitions featuring recent works by some of the exciting artists that Zeitgeist has been following; the first having been January’s Photography.
Participating artists are: Dan Brawner/ Nashville, TN Sara La/ Nashville, TN Kelly Popoff/ Columbus, OH
Like Zeitgeist’s summer Switchyard series that featured multi-media artists representative of the burgeoning contemporary art community in Nashville and beyond, you can look for future Open Gallery exhibitions to highlight sculpture, painting, drawing, and mixed media installation. Zeitgeist continues to introduce emerging artists who are consistently working in the studio, are currently seeking new avenues for their work, and new to the Nashville gallery scene.
In keeping with Zeitgeist’s commitment to up and coming as well as established artists, this group exhibition offers gallery-goers a glimpse of what they may have missed at Zeitgeist and what they have to look forward to. |
