Exhibiting Artist:
Lain York
Exhibit Description:
A Cluttered Landscape
Lain York is a native of Nashville whose painting continues to reference images found in history/ethnographic museum catalogs. The idea is that of the unidentified museum piece or the lost cultural record and is an attempt to deal with the intangible through physical and ordered means.

A Cluttered Landscape, refers to the idea that in contemporary society, the cultural artifact has lost any specific meaning; that art and artifact have been deconstructed and reassembled so many times and with greater frequency that original meaning has been clouded or lost. The cultural landscape is littered with so many records and objects that our relationship to the past is becoming more fragmented and history is no longer a reliable guide. Although this also means that we are all free to gather and mix anything and everything to derive what it means to be alive, it comes at a price.

Lain York is a graduate of the University of Tennessee Knoxville whose work can be found in the permanent collections of EMI Los Angeles, the Savannah College of Art, The Tennessee State Museum, and the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission. He had a solo show earlier this year at the Nashville International Airport, was included the Physical Reminders exhibition at The University of Arkansas, and currently has work in the Cheekwood-organized exhibit Tennessee Abstract Painters. His work has been published in New American Paintings, New York Arts Magazine, and Art Papers.
