HAMLETT DOBBINS
“You have two kinds of boys born in 1970: Lego boys and Lincoln Log boys. I’m a Lego boy.”

Color, shape, and spatial organization are used to striking effect in Hamlett Dobbins’ abstract canvases. Portrait-like shapes, composed of systematic brush strokes reminiscent of building blocks, are carefully arranged in a playful yet technically refined manner. Allusions to the history of painting peacefully coexist with veiled references to popular culture and a vast array of personal subjects that fire the artist’s imagination.
Many may remember Hamlett’s work from his recent CAP gallery show at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. A native of Tennessee, he has shown work in New York, Amsterdam, and in several group shows here at Zeitgeist. He received his BFA from the University of Memphis in 1993 and his MFA from the University of Iowa in 1999.
