Right to Assemble (second installment)
Zeitgeist is pleased to announce the second of three summer ensemble exhibition, Right to Assemble. The June, July and August gallery installations will feature luminaries from the Nashville artist studio/university/independent scene; some you have heard of and others just under the radar. The gallery feels strongly about continuing its tradition of opening the gallery in the summer months to group shows featuring artists that cut across the boundaries of the contemporary, visual art industry. In addition to pursuing commercial gallery careers, these artists can be found showing in alternative-artists spaces, university galleries, and museums.
Featured artists in July:
Derek Cote
Todd McDaniel
Kristi Hargrove
Andrew Smaldone
Ruth Zelanski
Derek Cote recently moved to Nashville and holds degrees from Western Washington University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. He recently showed large scale sculpture/installation at the Renaissance Center in Dickson, TN. He is currently teaching sculpture at Watkins College of art.
Todd McDaniel, has been a long time fixture in Nashville and has been living and working in New York City. He is making small abstract paintings with a colorful, architectural bend.
Kristi Hargrove is a long time Nashville-based artist and teacher whose latest work continues her exploration and deconstruction of graphite on paper. The works blend realistic images with abstract passages while making a sculptural landscape of the works by digging into and removing layers of the surface.
Andrew Smaldone is a Nashville native and Montgomery Bell Academy graduate who is living and working in Florence, Italy. He is currently teaching painting at Santa Reparata International School there and is the Italian art correspondent for Art Review based in London. His latest paintings incorporate minimal abstraction and architectural elements of the historic city he currently lives in.
Ruth Zelanski is a photographer whose current images contrast dramatic scale changes; sweeping landscapes with intimate portrait and interior elements. Her work was recently featured in a show at Gallery F. on the Scarritt Bennett campus.
Please also join us on Friday, July 9th from 5 to 8pm when Zeitgeist hosts a NAAD flood relief benefit for Finer Things Gallery. Artists from Finer Things will be showcased in the front gallery at Zeitgeist. Finer Things will receive 100% of all sales of work by their artists.
Gallery hours are 11AM to 5AM Tuesday through Saturday. For more information please call Janice Zeitlin or Lain York at 615-256-4805.

Right to Assemble (third installment)
Zeitgeist is pleased to announce the last of three summer ensemble exhibitions, Right to Assemble. The June, July and August gallery installations feature luminaries from the Nashville artist studio/university/independent scene; some you have heard of and others just under the radar. The gallery feels strongly about continuing its tradition of opening the gallery in the summer months to group shows featuring artists that cut across the boundaries of the contemporary, visual art industry. In addition to pursuing commercial gallery careers, these artists can be found showing in alternative-artists spaces, university galleries, and museums locally and internationally.
Featured artists in August:
Phillip Carpenter is a photographer, native Nashvillian, and the master-mind behind The Brief Gallery that operated for several months in Nashville’s downtown in 2009. His “Mockingbird” photography show combined internationally recognized artists such as William Eggleston and Mark Steinmetz with area artists such as Shawne Brown and Ciprian Conteras. His personal work ranges from landscape to architecturally provocative images.
Vesna Pavlović is currently the photography professor at Vanderbilt University and has had recent showings in Seattle, Washington, DC, and Copenhagen. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Gardens, Washington DC, USA, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC, USA, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade, Serbia. Her current work incorporates elements of installation and color studies. She is slated for an upcoming Gordon Contemporary Artists Project gallery show at Nashville’s Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
Brent Stewart is another Nashville-native and a photographer and film maker. He has had recent showings in New York, London, and Chicago and holds degrees from Goldsmiths College, London and the University of Tennessee. His current work evokes unsettling narratives from what might be a scary movie but treated with a more ethereal and beautiful sensibility.
John Whitten is a recent graduate of Watkins College of Art and Design. His current mixed media portraits of local artists/personalities incorporate graphite, bubble solution, sidewalk chalk, and wine. John has most recently shown at Three Squared in Nashville’s Chestnut studio complex.
Gallery hours are 11AM to 5AM Tuesday through Saturday. For more information please call Janice Zeitlin or Lain York at 615-256-4805.
